Lynden topples Meridian in straight sets

Senior outside hitter Ashley Shumate tallied 11 kills and 10 digs and Lynden volleyball toppled Meridian, 3-0 (25-6, 25-16, 25-14), in a battle of two Northwest Conference leaders on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at Lynden High School.

Lynden (12-1, 11-0 NWC) extended its win streak to nine games, and won its eighth straight via sweep. The Lions now have a 39-3 set record so far this season. Meridian (10-3, 8-3 NWC) has now lost two of its last three matches.

Senior setter Grace Rice tallied 28 assists and 11 digs, while senior outside hitter Haylee Koetje finished with eight kills and 13 digs.

Meridian was led by senior outside hitter Emry Claeys, who had seven kills and five digs. Junior libero Rylan Bernardy finished with 12 digs and sophomore setter Grace Wells had 14 assists.

Next up for Lynden is a trip to the Burlington-Edison invite at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. Meridian’s next match is a home contest versus Blaine (2-8, 2-8 NWC) at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16.
