A man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of an assault that took place Saturday near an apartment building on the 1000 block of State Street.

During a search, Bellingham Police found bags of fentanyl pills — likely more than 1,000 made to look like oxycontin — fentanyl patches, $2,912 cash and a loaded pistol, according to a Tuesday release.

Rene P. Nima, 22, and others allegedly assaulted a man who had yelled at the group, police said. The victim, who suffered two severe cuts to the face during the assault, said he recognized Nima and knew he lived in the apartment building.

The victim identified Nima from a photo line-up. The next day, cops found Nima on the south side of the apartment building and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Nima was previously convicted of a felony, therefore illegally carrying a gun, police said.

His other offenses related to the Saturday assault include possession with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the release. Nima was booked into Whatcom County Jail and is being held on a $25,000 bond.
