The Bellingham Police Department is investigating an assault that occurred Friday night, April 26 in the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Officers responded to a report of an assault around 11:18 p.m. in the 1500 block of Alabama Street, according to Megan Peters, a spokesperson for BPD. When officers arrived, they found a large gathering of people and a man in immediate need of medical assistance. Another man had fled the area after the altercation.

The victim had multiple stab wounds and was transported to the hospital for further treatment, according to the police activity log.

A man unknown to the people at the gathering attempted to join but was unwelcome, according to Peters. The suspect was asked to leave and was escorted away by the victim. The suspect then attacked the victim and fled.

The name of the victim is being withheld. Peters did not offer information if the suspect had been arrested.

BPD is asking anyone who witnessed the assault or was in the area and who has not already provided a statement to the police to contact What-Comm at 360-676-6911, and reference case number 24B23477.

A previous version of this story misstated the name of the neighborhood. The incident happened in the Roosevelt neighborhood. This story was updated to reflect this change on Monday, April 29 at 12:46 p.m.
