Former Bellingham High School baseball player Austin Shenton has been named to the Tampa Bay Rays’ 26-man Opening Day roster, the team announced Wednesday, March 27.

Shenton is a 2016 Bellingham graduate and fifth-round 2019 MLB Draft pick by the Seattle Mariners. The infielder played for five different minor league teams over the last five years as Seattle traded him to the Tampa Bay Rays organization in July 2021.

Last season, Shenton appeared in 134 minor league games, first with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits and then the Triple-A Durham Bulls. He finished 2023 with 29 home runs and 99 RBI while batting .304.

Shenton played collegiate baseball at Bellevue College (2016–17) and Florida International University (2018–19). He also played for the West Coast League’s Bellingham Bells from 2016–17.
