An accident on southbound Interstate 5 near Portal Way is blocking all lanes, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Southbound traffic is being diverted to Portal Way. The on-ramp to southbound I-5 from Portal Way is also closed, WSDOT said in a post to X.

A car hauler was traveling too fast as it entered the interstate, causing it to tip over and slide across the road in front of traffic, Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding said in a post to X. A van then hit the hauler. The driver of the van suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the hauler was uninjured.

Officials provided no estimated time for reopening. Tows have been requested, Harding said.

WSDOT shared a video of drivers traveling the wrong way up the southbound I-5 Grandview on-ramp to avoid the backup.

“If there’s a secondary collision, we’ll all be here longer,” WSDOT posted.
