Girls basketball: Lynden Christmas Classic tournament
Various times, Dec. 28–30, Lynden Christian High School

The Lynden Christmas Classic is Whatcom County’s premiere holiday basketball event.

It’s never the same teams year after year, which helps to keep it interesting, and it always is. This year, in addition to Lynden and Lynden Christian, visiting teams will include Prosser, Riverside, White River, Olympia, Snohomish and Inglemoor.

Round one tips off on Thursday, Dec. 28 as Lynden takes on White River at 4:45 p.m. and Lynden Christian faces Class 4A Inglemoor at 8:15 p.m.

LC and Lynden, which are on opposite sides of the bracket, do have a chance to meet in the championship on Saturday, Dec. 30. With a regular season-ending game already scheduled between the two teams for Feb. 3, there is a possibility for a rare second matchup between the in-city rivals.

Last year’s tournament champion, Eastlake, will not return this season. LC lost to Eastlake in the title game before going on to reach the 1A state championship.

Lynden Christian's Demi Dykstra attempts a 3-pointer as a defender reaches her too late while spectators watch seated on the bleachers.

Recreation: Last Chance Marathon and Half Marathon
9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, Fairhaven Park Pavilion

Do you need an excuse to run a whole lot of miles on a scenic route before winter’s cruel curtain darkens each day even further? Well, then this event is for you.

The half marathon and full marathon each follow the 13.1-mile out-and-back route from Fairhaven Park Pavilion to Clayton Beach via the Interurban trail. The full marathon is the same route run twice.

It’s a mostly flat course, according to the event’s website, with “spectacular views,” and on-leash dogs are also welcome. There are two aid stations on the route, at Chuckanut Crest Drive and Larrabee State Park. Participants must bring all other desired provisions for between stations.

The entry fee is $60, and $85 if you want an event-themed shirt.
