Steve Brummel, Western Washington University’s senior associate director of athletics, was named interim athletics director April 18.

Western Athletics announced Brummel’s new, temporary role just a few weeks after former athletic director Steve Card retired on March 31 — ending a 10-year tenure.

Brummel has worked in various roles over his 29 years at Western, including 17 years as an instructor in the College of Business and Economics and as a sports administrator for four of the school’s varsity sports. He is in his 10th year as an associate director of athletics.

A 1993 Western graduate, Brummel received a bachelor’s in business administration and was a three-year letter winner as a running back for the Vikings’ football team.

Western is still soliciting applications for its vacant athletic director position.
