The courtyard of the Lightcatcher Building must be one of the most beautiful and distinctive music venues in Bellingham. The cafe space adjacent to the courtyard in the home of the Whatcom Museum is now home to Bar Cicotti, a cafe serving Italian-inspired drinks, appetizers, sandwiches and pasta. From 6–8 p.m. every Wednesday night while the weather is nice, they host jazz performances — which make for an unforgettable night out.

The performers are generally duos and trios, and feature some of the area’s finest local players. I stopped by last week to take in the trio of Thomas Harris on saxophone, Mark Hunter on upright bass and Christian Casolary on drums. They turned in a fantastic set with all three of them constantly finding ways to keep each other on their toes.

While you could expect the sounds of saxophone and drums to cut through anywhere, the perfect acoustics of the location also made it possible to hear all the nuances of Hunter’s inventive bass lines and countermelodies.

Upcoming performers include the duo of guitarist Jamie Findlay and percussionist Steven Tate Wednesday, July 13, and guitarist Alex Golombek and bassist Eirik Haugbro the following week. No cover charge is required, but you’re probably going to want to sample the delicious offerings of Bar Cicotti while you listen.

The series is organized by Jan Peters, who is also due some congratulations for recently receiving the Mayor’s Arts Award for his work as a booker and promoter. In addition to his contributions to the jazz scene, he created and ran Irish and Folk Mondays for many years, and is also super-involved with the blues scene.

The more I learn about the Bellingham music business, the more I feel like what we really need right now are more promoters, bookers and organizers who can do what Peters does by creating ongoing events and building audiences and community around them.

Speaking of jazz and community, congratulations are also due to the team who put on the weekly Lindy at the Leo swing dance. They are celebrating their first anniversary this week, having hosted dances every Tuesday and live bands once a month. The Hot Tomatoes and the T.O.P. Jazz band will be on hand for the party Tuesday, July 19.

Finally, the schedule doesn’t seem to be available as of my deadline, but Saturday, July 16 is also the Sunnyland Stomp. From 3–8 p.m., visitors can wander around Sunnyland and the odds are pretty good they’re going to find some fun music somewhere, as the neighborhood comes alive with performances in yards and other improvised locations.
