Wrestling sub regionals, basketball district tournaments are coming

The regular season is winding down for winter sports teams and the postseason is finally here.

Wrestlers are hitting the mats this weekend for their sub-regional tournaments hoping to qualify for regionals and continue on to the state tournament.

Basketball is wrapping up by the end of the week and district tournaments tipoff next week. 

Meridian’s Lexi Garvin and Emma Hill will represent Whatcom County at the state bowling tournament at Narrows Plaza Bowl in University Place. 

Garvin and Hill are the first ever state bowlers in school history for Meridian. 

Here’s a breakdown of the road to state for winter sports.

Girls bowling

The final destination is here. The state bowling championships will be held Thursday through Saturday.

Whatcom County has two representatives in Meridian’s Lexi Garvin and Emma Hill.

The pair will bowl in the 1A/2A championships Friday starting at 9:30 a.m.


Wrestling

The boys 1A sub regional tournament will be held Saturday at Granite Falls High School.

The top six wrestlers from each weight class will advance to regionals the following weekend at Hoquiam High School.

Sedro-Woolley will host the boys 2A sub regional tournament where the top five wrestlers in each weight class will advance to regionals which will be held at Lindbergh High School.

The boys 3A tournament will be at Stanwood High School. The top five from each weight class will move on to regionals at Snohomish High School. 

The girls sub regional is being held at Meridian High School. The top five from each weight class will qualify for regionals at Sedro-Woolley High School.

All regional tournaments will be Saturday, Feb. 12. 

The state wrestling tournament is Feb. 18–19 at the Tacoma Dome.

Basketball

Postseason basketball starts next week and seeding for district tournaments will be determined at the conclusion of the regular season Saturday. 

The District 1 1A tournament will consist of all five schools from the Northwest Conference for both boys and girls. The tournament will be held Feb. 8–15.

The top two teams out of that will move on to crossover games with District 2.

Crossover games will be Saturday, Feb. 19, at King’s High School. 

Winners of the crossovers will advance to state.

Up a classification in 2A, the District 1 boys tournament will take place Feb. 9–18. Games will be held at home sites of higher seeds and Mount Vernon High School starting Feb. 14.

The girls tournament will take place Feb. 10–19 and follow the same format as the boys tournament.

The top three teams advance to regionals.

The 3A District 1 boys tournament is scheduled for Feb. 8–19. It will be made up of 16 teams with seeding not yet determined. 

It will be held at home sites of higher seeds and Everett Community College. 

The 3A girls tournament is set for Feb. 7–19 with the same format. 

The 1A/2A state basketball tournament is March 2–5 at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The 3A/4A tournament is scheduled for those same dates at the Tacoma Dome.
