Baseball: 1A/2A state tournament semifinals and championships
Various times, May 24–25, Joe Martin Stadium

Whether a Whatcom County team is in these tournaments or not, this is one of the best new additions to the local slate of postseason events.

Last year was the first time these games were held at Joe Martin Stadium, and county fans had a chance to watch Lynden play in the 2A state title game against Tumwater — a thrilling, 2-1 game decided on a walk-off by the visitors.

The final two rounds of these state tournaments were previously played at Yakima County Stadium before being moved to Bellingham, making it significantly more convenient for local teams and fans.

There are currently three teams alive in the 1A and 2A state tournaments that have a chance to stay home: Meridian (1A), Lynden Christian (1A) and Lynden (2A).

Track and field: 2A/3A/4A state championships
All day, May 23–25, Mount Tahoma High School (Tacoma)

This time of the year, a little travel is often required to catch local athletes in action at state events (outside of baseball, of course).

The Class 2A, 3A and 4A state championship track and field meet is high on the list of events worth traveling for. It’s organized chaos that is especially entertaining if you are a fan of the various sports involved.

The competition is also the best of the two statewide meets due to the larger classifications (1B, 2B and 1A are hosted at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima). It’s one of the top showcases in Washington of pure athleticism at the high school level.

Better yet: Whatcom County athletes have routinely won 10 or more individual state championships, and they are often in contention for team titles.

Recreation: Ski to Sea
All day, Sunday, May 26, various locations

Ski to Sea is probably the one event that needs little introduction.

The seven-leg, multisport relay race is Whatcom County’s largest annual recreational event, with 500 teams of 3-8 people descending on the city to race from Mt. Baker Ski Area to Marine Park in Fairhaven.

Then, in the most Bellingham way possible, there’s a festival where spectators, community members and participants convene to drink beer, celebrate, eat food and drink more beer.

Athletes attend from around the world, as the race is well-recognized in its genre.
