The Bellingham boys soccer team had no shortage of offense Monday night as the Bayhawks rolled right by Lakewood 7-0 to earn their ninth win of the season.
Bellingham scored early and often with its first goal coming off the foot of junior Finn Burwell in the 17th minute.
Senior Aiden Buckingham added the Bayhawks’ second goal in the 25th minute and just three minutes later, senior Kaden Potts added a third.
The Bayhawks led 3-0 at halftime and had plenty left in store for the second half.
Bellingham head coach Spencer Wolfe said patience was important for the offense to get going.
“That’s a huge key for a team like Lakewood,” Wolfe said. “We have to earn everything we get from them. We really valued the ball and switched it side to side. The more patient we were, the more opportunities we created.”
It didn’t take long for the Bayhawks to pick up where they left off in the second half with Burwell tallying his second goal of the night in the 45th minute. Not to be outdone, Potts also notched his second goal of the game five minutes later.
Bellingham got goals from freshman Cooper Whipple and senior Christian Grabau later in the second half to round out the offensive outburst.
Wolfe said being up by a handful of goals in the second half allowed the team to work on their weaknesses.
“A game like that is nice because we get more guys minutes, and we get to rotate guys as well which is a good opportunity for them,” he said. “We get to work on things we really want to hone in on later in the season.”
Bellingham has four games left in the regular season with arguably the most important one Wednesday against Squalicum. It’ll be a battle between two of the top teams in the state.
Senior goalkeeper Henry White said it’s a game he’s looking forward to.
“Mentally, I think everyone is going to be up for it,” White said. “It’s sort of the one I’ve had marked on the calendar for months now. Squalicum, for me, it’s personal. I’ve known those kids for a long time and I just want to beat them. It’s senior year, I have got to.”
Bellingham and Squalicum will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20 at Squalicum High School.
