Drivers on Woburn Street — the busy north-south thoroughfare at Barkley Village — will face delays as crews replace aging sewer pipes.
The work begins Monday, April 24, two blocks east of Woburn on Yew Street, in the block between Carolina and Texas streets. From there, crews will work their way north on Woburn from Texas Street to Barkley Boulevard.
Traffic on Woburn will be reduced to one lane between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the sewer main replacement project. Certain blocks of Woburn may be closed to traffic altogether for short periods; detours will be in place. On-street parking on Woburn and Yew will be restricted at times.
Flaggers will be present for about six months, according to the project page.
Crews will add a larger-diameter pipe to replace a 1938 sewer line and to accommodate growth in north Bellingham. The existing sewer main under Woburn is at capacity, according to a City of Bellingham news release.
Drivers will be able to access Barkley Village throughout the project, and the city anticipates that businesses will remain open.
Sewer work will also take place at Woburn south of Fraser Street.
