Skagit County resident John C. Bromet, known to many by the nickname "Peace Wizard," died April 3 at the age of 83.

Bromet was a prominent community figure, often seen walking around Bellingham and Mount Vernon holding a sign that read "Peace." He lived on Feral Farm in Rockport, Skagit County.

A retired teacher, Bromet most admired activist Mildred Lisette Norman (aka "Peace Pilgrim") who walked 25,000 miles in a protest for peace between 1953 and 1981, the Skagit Valley Herald reported in 2014.

He was a lifelong member of Kulshan Chorus, the organization said in a Facebook post commemorating Bromet.

Sedro-Woolley Police Department also posted about Bromet, writing "We are thankful for every time we got a chance to spend time talking with John or giving him a lift across town. Many of us have cards from John hanging in our offices. We need more people like John in the world. He was so caring to everyone and quick with a smile and kind words."
