Gallery: Paper Airplane Derby in Ferndale

More than 200 people gathered to fold paper airplanes that zipped and glided through the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center Feb. 4 for the inaugural paper airplane derby in Ferndale.

The derby launched this year’s series of recreational events hosted by the City of Ferndale.

“Why not give people an excuse to have fun?” said Riley Sweeney, the city’s communications officer. “Something that adults need to be reminded of.”

As the kids enjoyed the wonders of aviation, the adults remembered the simplistic joy of a paper airplane. Greg Steindorf brought his childhood instruction manual, which introduced planes like the “crane” and “starship” to the fleet.
