Gallery: Northern Lights shine over Whatcom County, region

Hundreds of people drove around the county Saturday night, seeking out the Northern Lights. They were a result of one of the strongest geomagnetic storms in years.

Visible to the naked eye were long, cascading pale columns that spiraled and stretched around the clear sky.

All photographs in this gallery were taken with a 3-to 10-second exposure, allowing for the camera’s sensor to capture more vibrant colors than what was observed.

The National Weather Service office in Seattle said the aurora was still “going strong after 2 a.m. local time” in a X post.
