Hundreds of people headed to Pioneer Park to see hot air balloons glow brightly in Ferndale on Friday, July 28. The event was one of many taking place in Ferndale this weekend during the Whatcom County Old Settlers Association’s 127th Pioneer Days Celebration.

The Friday night balloon glow, called Kongregation, specifically honored Jeff “Kong” Shields, an accomplished hot air balloon pilot who died in 2021. Friends and family in the hot air balloon community joined the glow to remember Shields.
