Northbound I-5 near Lakeway Drive and Iowa Street was shut down for nearly 9 hours Wednesday into early Thursday morning, Sept. 5 after two crashes shut down all lanes of traffic.

The collisions, one of which involved a car and a semi-truck, occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday north of Lakeway Drive at milepost 253, according to the Washington State Patrol. The car-semi collision involved serious injuries, not believed to be life threatening

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding said in an email to CDN that a trooper advised the other collision involved three vehicles.

No other information about the condition of the drivers was available as of Thursday afternoon. CDN reached out to State Patrol for more information.

Photos shared on social media show a red semi-truck with a crunched cab.

Traffic was backed up for hours as crews cleaned up the collisions. Drivers were diverted off of northbound I-5 at the Lakeway exit, resulting in traffic backups on Lakeway and other Bellingham roads.

All lanes on northbound I-5 at milepost 253 reopened around 1:30 a.m, according to WSDOT.
