Meridian junior Daniel Blankenburg won his first state title and 11 other Whatcom County golfers placed at state tournaments May 21–22 at various locations.
Blankenburg, who tied for seventh last season, won the 1A boys individual championship by seven strokes with a two-round score of 142 (70-72) at Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis. He posted tournament-high scores in each round.
Sophomore Matthew Blankenburg, Daniel’s brother, finished tied for 20th (167) with Lynden Christian senior Thomas DenHartog. Meridian also finished second as a team with a 49.5 team score.
Ferndale senior Baylor Larrabee fell two strokes short of his second straight 3A boys individual championship at Hawks Prairie Golf Course in Lacey, Thurston County. Larrabee, a UCLA signee, posted a two-round score of 144 (76-68) — finishing behind Stanwood senior Conrad Chisman (143; 70-73).
In the 2A boys tournament, Lynden junior Jack Stapleton and Sehome senior John Kummer tied for ninth with an identical performance at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Liberty Lake, Spokane County. The pair each shot a two-round score of 152, with the same results in each round (74-78).
Both improved on their state performances from last season. Kummer took second in 2023 while Stapleton finished 19th.
Lynden senior Crew Price tied for 20th (162; 81-81) and Sehome senior Gabe Quick tied for 32nd (168; 79-89). The Lions finished fifth as a team with 51.5 team points, while the Mariners took sixth (40).
Sehome senior Cassie Hogan led all local finishers at the 2A girls tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake. Hogan tied for 14th with a score of 171 (85-86), and Lynden sophomore Kinsley Rector tied for 20th (180; 86-94). Lynden junior Lucy Jones finished 33rd (195; 97-98).
Lynden Christian senior Madeleine Engels was the lone placer in the 1A girls tournament at Riverside Golf Club, taking 16th with a score of 194 (97-97).
