CONNOR’S PICKS

Baseball: Lynden at Selah
6 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 and 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, Carlon Park

This isn’t local, but it’s the best matchup of spring break week by far. Who doesn’t want to watch a two-game series between a pair of teams that battled in last year’s 2A state semifinals?

The last time these teams met, Lynden advanced to its first state championship since 2012 as the No. 5 seed following an 11-0 drubbing of top-seeded Selah at Joe Martin Field, ending the Vikings’ hopes of a third state title in six seasons.

This time, however, Lynden (6-0) will be on the road instead of playing in its backyard. Selah (6-1) has played three more games than the Lions with a stretch of three two-game series to open the season.

It’s also worth mentioning that these teams faced off in a two-game series at the same time last season, and Lynden lost both by a combined score of 14-6 — further proof the regular season can be deceiving.

WWU: Track and field at Doris Heritage Track Festival
All day, Friday, April 5, Renton Memorial Stadium

With the only home Western Washington University games this week being over the weekend, why not catch some relatively local Vikings track and field?

This meet is hosted by Seattle Pacific University and is the closest the Vikings will be to home until Saturday, April 27, when Western hosts its annual Ralph Vernacchia Invitational at Civic Stadium.

Western is already five meets into its outdoor season after an impressive performance at indoor nationals where six Vikings competed on the biggest stage. Now, Western has a chance to make a statement at its rival’s home meet after strong showings at the UBC Open and Oregon Preview March 22–24.

Recreation: Spring break day camp
9 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, Birch Bay State Park

Need some time off from watching your kids while they’re on spring break? Well, here you go. Thank me later.

Drop them off at 9 a.m., and don’t even think about them again until at least 4 p.m. ahead of a 4:30 p.m. pick-up time. They will be treated to outdoor excitement, insects, a Nerf party and arcade games. In the meantime, you could bring a camp chair and kick back on the shores of Birch Bay.

Registration and a modest fee of $35 is required. I would say that’s worth it for a care-free day by the bay.
