Sixth-inning Sehome run secures upset over previously unbeaten Blaine

Hudson Neff notches game-winning score in 4-3 win over Borderites

By Connor J. Benintendi Sports Editor

Mariners sophomore Hudson Neff scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, breaking a 3-3 tie, and Sehome baseball handed Blaine its first loss of the season, 4-3, on Thursday, March 21, at Sehome High School.

Blaine (5-1) entered the game having shutout its last three opponents by a combined score of 15-0. Sehome (2-4) had lost its last two games, each by just one run. Neff ended that losing streak for the Mariners, stunning the red-hot Borderites.

Neff finished the game 1-for-3 batting with two runs scored. Fellow Sehome sophomore Gunnar Tweit went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

Junior pitcher Ryder McGrath earned the win for the Mariners, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four hits, no earned runs and two walks while striking out 10 batters.

Blaine seniors Grady Swinburnson and Alejandro Moser-Hernandez and freshman Aaron Garza each went 1 for 3 at the plate, and the trio each scored a run. Senior pitcher Diego Gutierrez was dealt the loss after pitching 2.2 innings and allowing two earned runs and two walks while striking out three batters.

Next up for Sehome is a road game at Lynden (5-0) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26. Blaine will host Overlake (4-4) at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.
