Lynden baseball stays hot with rivalry win over LC

Pitchers dominate both sides of the bat in 4-2 win for Lions

By Connor J. Benintendi Sports Editor

Lynden baseball dealt rival Lynden Christian its second loss of the season while staying undefeated itself in a 4-2 early season victory over the Lyncs on Tuesday, March 19 at Lynden High School.

Strong pitching by Lynden senior Kael Stapleton and LC sophomore Eli Maberry kept the scoring at a minimum, despite both teams averaging more than seven runs scored per game coming into the contest.

Lynden (4-0) erupted for three runs in the bottom of the third, spurred by a two-run single from Stapleton that scored sophomore Dane Marti and freshman Gordy Bedlington. Two batters later, with bases loaded, sophomore Matthew Carroll grounded out to third base for the inning’s first out, but sophomore Spencer Adams made it home.

LC scored once in the fourth inning, but Lynden re-extended its lead to three in the bottom of the sixth. The Lyncs got another run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh, making it 4-2 with two outs and two runners on base.

On LC’s next at-bat, junior Austin Engels was walked, loading the bases. Sophomore Samuel Kok had an opportunity to extend the game, but he lined out to first base on the fourth pitch.

Stapleton pitched six innings for Lynden and allowed three hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out three batters. He also led the Lions offensively, going 1-for-2 batting with two RBIs. Carroll relieved Stapleton on the mound in the seventh, allowing two hits and a walk.

Maberry pitched six innings for LC as well, surrendering four hits, four earned runs and five walks while striking out one. He was also the Lyncs’ leading hitter, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate.

Lynden’s next game will be on the road at Ferndale (1-0) at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. LC hosts Squalicum (0-3) at 4:30 p.m. on the same day.
