Sehome track and field earned a meet-high 16 event wins in a season-opening tri-meet with Bellingham and Squalicum on Wednesday, March 13 at Civic Stadium.
The Mariners’ girls team won nine events while its boys group captured seven. Bellingham had the second most with 10 victories, while Squalicum had eight.
Senior Grant Gusukuma won both the boys shot put and discus events for Sehome, posting personal records in both. Gusukuma threw a 41-2.50 in the shot put and beat the second-place discus finisher by more than 20 feet with his mark of 140-3.00.
Sehome sophomore Hayden Niewiadomski also took first place in both the high jump and long jump events. Niewiadomski notched a 4-8.00 mark in the former event and 30-11.25 mark in the latter.
Bellingham senior and three-time state champion Chayse Flick-Williams won the girls 100-meter dash (12.84 seconds) and long jump (16-8.00) — both events she has previously won state championships in.
Squalicum sophomore Jolie Paz was literally an inch away from two event victories. Paz won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.12 seconds and came in second in the shot put with a mark of 29-1.50. Sehome junior Camden Chahley won the event with a 29-2.25 mark.
