Crews will return next month to install lights

The roundabout at the intersection of East Smith Road and Hannegan Road will reopen to traffic at the end of the working day, Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The intersection has been closed for a month for construction of a roundabout. Whatcom County Public Works said in a news release Monday that demobilization activities and general site clean-up will continue on Thursday, but no traffic delays are expected. Crews will return next month to install lights and “hydroseed” the site.

Public works cautioned drivers that the intersection has changed significantly from a signalized intersection to a multi-lane roundabout.

“Please slow down and use caution while traveling through the intersection for the first time,” public works officials said in the news release. “Drivers should expect the roundabout to be similar to those on the Guide Meridian.”

Drivers can sign up for project updates on Whatcom County’s website.
