JESSE’S PICKS

Lookout Sessions: Damien Jurado
7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, May 1 and 2, Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.

The prolific Seattle singer-songwriter Damien Jurado has had a strong cult following ever since his early days putting out albums on Sub Pop in the late ’90s. His songs are literary, beautiful and frequently quite dark. He put out no less than three albums last year on his own label. He’s playing two nights in the Walton Theatre, the side room of the Mount Baker Theatre, on Wednesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 2.

Hot Damn Scandal with the Hot Tomatoes
6 p.m. Saturday, May 4, Boundary Bay Brewery, 1107 Railroad Ave.

A lot of local music fans spend all winter looking forward to outdoor music season. A few outdoor shows have already happened this year, but if you wanted to identify the exact moment when outdoor music season begins in earnest, it might be when Hot Damn Scandal take the stage at the Boundary Bay beer garden on Saturday, May 4. Expect a danceable mix of vintage jazz, ragtime and Americana, held together by strong original songwriting.

Las Cafeteras
7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

Las Cafeteras are a fantastic band out of East Los Angeles, playing the traditional Mexican folk style known as son jarocho with some modern twists. They’re at the Wild Buffalo on Sunday, May 5, with local openers Bilongo providing their high-powered Latin jazz.
