Ferndale’s Larrabee captures individual title at Birger Solberg Invitational

Sehome earns team title with five top-15 finishes

Ferndale’s reigning 3A state champion Baylor Larrabee won the 11-team Birger Solberg Invitational boys golf tournament on Tuesday, April 16 at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Larrabee finished with an 18-hole score of 71, edging Meridian’s Daniel Blankenburg by one stroke for the title. The tournament included all 11 Whatcom County high schools.

Sehome won the team title, followed by Meridian in second place. Ferndale came in third while Lynden and Lynden Christian finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

LC’s Thomas DenHartog and Sehome’s John Kummer tied for third with an 18-hole score of 80, while Ferndale’s Travis Brockie rounded out the top-five finishers with his score of 82.

Including Kummer, Sehome had five golfers in the top 15.

Whatcom County boys golf teams will jump back into action on Thursday, April 18, with a pair of tournaments. Bellingham and Sehome will be at an eight-team tournament at Sudden Valley Golf Course, while Squalicum, Ferndale, LC, Mount Baker, Blaine, Lynden, Meridian and Nooksack Valley will meet at Shuksan Golf Course. Both tournaments are set for a 3 p.m. start.
