CONNOR’S PICKS
Girls soccer: Ferndale at Sehome
7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, Sehome High School
Normally I would say “Something has got to give” or “May the better team win” but, in soccer, we unfortunately have ties. (Yes, it is my least favorite part of the sport.)
Regardless, Sehome (6-0-2) and Ferndale (6-0-1) are both undefeated and rolling in the early season, making this a must-win (or draw) contest for each program.
Ferndale has outscored opponents 19-5 so far this season, mostly earning victories on the backs of its defense. Sehome, on the other hand, has been an offensive juggernaut, outscoring its opponents 32-12 with just one more game played than the Golden Eagles.
This game is a tale of two programs, as well. Sehome has made the 2A state tournament in each of the last four possible seasons and reached the title game twice during that span. Ferndale has made the 3A state tournament twice in the last decade (2019–20, 2021–22), and was unable to move beyond the quarterfinal round in either appearance.
That said, the Golden Eagles are better this year, making this a matchup worth watching.
WWU: Women’s soccer vs. Northwest Nazarene
4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, Harrington Field
The last time Western Washington University women’s soccer faced off with Northwest Nazarene was in the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship game.
Western, which defeated the Nighthawks 1-0 for its sixth GNAC title, went on to win its second NCAA Division II National Championship. There you go, the stage is set.
As of Tuesday, Sept. 26, the Vikings are 3-2-2 (1-0-1 GNAC) while Northwest Nazarene is undefeated at 4-0-2 (2-0 GNAC). No matter what happens between now and this game, it will be a possible preview of the upcoming November playoffs.
In addition to the match, Western will also be officially honoring the Vikings’ national championship victory with a banner raising ahead of the contest. Get there early for the festivities.
Recreation: Lummi Island Loop
11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, Lummi Island
Originally scheduled for Aug. 6, the Lummi Island Loop will finally commence its inaugural edition on Sunday, Oct. 8.
There will be a 5K and 10K, with walkers and runners of all skill levels and ages to join in. The event is sponsored and organized by the Lummi Island Foundation for Education — a group that helped keep Beach Elementary School on Lummi Island open when the Ferndale School District mulled its closing.
Following the races around the island, pizza and drinks will be available at the Beach Store Cafe for participants who elect to indulge.
