Girls swim: Anacortes at Sehome
3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.19, Arne Hanna Aquatic Center

These two programs, which are year after year among the best in Class 2A, only have one dual meet each season.

Both groups send multiple relay teams and individuals to the state meet each season, and this contest in the early season will be a great preview of who could reach those heights this season.

Last season, Anacortes finished second in the state and Sehome finished 16th. In 2021–22, Sehome took third while Anacortes wound up in fourth. The Mariners getting an early-season swim at home against a solid Anacortes should help them gauge where they will end up this year.

WWU: Cross Country vs. Bill Roe Invitational
10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, Lake Padden Park

Western Washington University cross country’s only home meet of the season never disappoints. Last season, the men’s and women’s teams each recorded first-place finishes before going on to send seven athletes to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Five of those seven runners (Andrew Oslin, Ryan Clough, Jeret Gillingham, Jalen Javurek and Kevin McDermott) have returned this season, in addition to a wealth of other top runners that made it to the West Regional meet.

The Vikings’ men’s and women’s teams already finished first in their season opener, the Puget Sound Invitational. They will hope to build on that strong start at home.

Recreation: Bellingham Bay Marathon
6:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, Depot Market Square/Lummi Nation School

The Bellingham Bay Marathon event is an action-packed day of running with participants from across Whatcom County of all skill and fitness levels. All proceeds are donated to Whatcom County youth nonprofit organizations, according to its website.

There is a 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon and marathon relay, all stuffed into one Sunday morning on Bellingham Bay.

The 5K, 10K and half marathon all begin at Depot Market Square, while the marathon and marathon relay start at the Lummi Nation School and end in downtown Bellingham.
