Volleyball: Lynden at Lynden Christian
7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, Lynden Christian High School

This intense rivalry is a fascinating watch no matter the season.

Each of these teams reached their respective state tournaments a season ago, as they regularly do, and both have reloaded for 2023–24.

Lynden has won the last two contests between these teams; an LC win would be its first over Lynden since March 13, 2021. That will be a tall task for a Lyncs squad that lost six key seniors to graduation, while Lynden returned nearly its entire starting lineup from last season.

Boys tennis: 2A Doubles Invite
4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, Sehome High School

If you’re a Whatcom County high school tennis fan, this is the early-season tournament to watch.

Sehome will host nine Class 2A teams — including Bellingham, Lynden and Squalicum — for a two-day invitational at its state-of-the-art courts. This event serves as a preview of the district tournament in October, as many of the top players here will go on to earn postseason seeds.

Only two local players who reached state a season ago have returned (Sehome’s Zach Chai and Bellingham’s Jacob Kuhn), so expect some rising stars to make an impact in this tournament.

Recreation: Mount Baker Hill Climb
7 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, Mount Baker Highway

The Mount Baker Hill Cimb — a 22-mile uphill bike ride that includes 4,462 feet of elevation gain — is back and already sold out.

Riders ascend Mt. Baker Highway (SR-542) from near Chair 9 Pizza & Bar in Glacier to Artist Point. This year, the race has already reached its cap of 450 riders, but spectators and volunteers remain welcome. (Keep in mind the road is closed from 7 a.m. to noon.)

Phil Gaimon, a former professional road racing cyclist, will also be participating in this year’s race.

There are three different start times, depending on division: Social, 7 a.m.; recreational, 8 a.m.; competitive, 8:30 a.m.
