CONNOR’S PICKS

Girls soccer: 2A District 1 championship
Teams TBD, Tuesday, Oct. 31, Civic Stadium

The teams that will be present in this contest are yet to be determined, but this could be one of the fall sports season’s premier matches.

Sehome (11-1-3) earned the tournament’s top seed, finishing the season with four straight victories.

The Mariners earned a first-round bye and will face No. 8 Sedro-Woolley in the district quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26. Despite reaching the 2A state tournament each of the last four seasons, Sehome has not played in a district title game since 2018 (1-0 loss to Liberty).

Defending district champion Lynden (10-3-3) comes in as the No. 5 seed, while Bellingham (10-2-3) is the tournament’s second seed. The Bayhawks lost to Lynden in the 2022 2A District 1 title game before being eliminated in the first round of the state tournament.

Sehome and Bellingham are on opposite sides of the bracket, making it the only possible district title matchup with two Whatcom County teams.

WWU: Volleyball vs. Seattle Pacific
7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, Carver Gym

Western Washington University’s volleyball team has recovered nicely from a rigorous non-league schedule, and the Vikings (7-12, 7-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) are now in a three-way tie for second place in the GNAC.

First-place Seattle Pacific (16-3, 10-1 GNAC) comes to town for the second of two matches between the two teams, and Western is looking to back up its Oct. 5 sweep of the Falcons in the first meeting.

Redshirt freshman Emily Vossenkuhl led the Vikings with 11 kills in that straight-set win, and she will look to replicate that performance in the second meeting. Vossenkuhl is currently fourth on the team with 108 kills on the season.

Recreation: Open Roller Skate
6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, Depot Market Square

These community roller skating events don’t happen often (about once a month), so grab your skates and head to downtown Bellingham’s Depot Market Square if it’s your cup of tea.

No registration is required, but bringing your own equipment is. Roller skates or in-line skates are accepted.
