CONNOR’S PICKS

Boys basketball: Lynden Christian at King’s
1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, King’s High School

These teams love to play each other. Lynden Christian probably just loves it a little more after beating King’s in each of the last two 1A state championship games.

That history is what makes this game, especially as a season opener, one to attend. This game’s only purpose is for each team to be able to gauge how last year’s success has rolled over to the new season.

LC lost six seniors at the end of last season, which does make the Lyncs more vulnerable early on in the schedule. King’s, however, also lost five, making this contest very difficult to predict.

In the regular season meeting between these teams last year, LC won 73-55 before winning the state title rematch by 10.

WWU: Women’s basketball vs. Simon Fraser
7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, Carver Gym

This game will be Western Washington University women’s basketball’s first Great Northwest Athletic Conference game of the season, and it’s at home.

Western is off to a 3-1 start to the season, and the Vikings have a good chance to begin their conference schedule with a victory against Simon Fraser (4-3).

This matchup has been dominated by Western the last few seasons, as the Vikings have won four of their last five games against the Red Leafs on a twice-per-year cadence.

Following this game, Western will be on the road for five straight games from Dec. 14–Jan. 6 (winter break is included in that span) so it’ll be crucial to win this one.

Recreation: Fairhaven Frosty 5K & 10K Race
9:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, Fairhaven Park

One of many local holiday-themed fun runs, the Fairhaven Frosty 5K and 10K offer another opportunity to dress up in holiday gear and join a social run/walk.

There will be awards based on performance and costumes, candy canes for all runners, and refreshments at the finish line, according to the event’s website.

Registration is required, and the price is based on age and Greater Bellingham Running Club membership status. GBRC members can run the 5K or 10K for $10, while non-members must pay $15 for the 5K and $20 for the 10K.

The fee is $5 for non-member runners ages 10 and under, and free for members of the same age group.
