Suspect eludes police during high-speed chase through Bellingham

Driver escaped police perimeter near Lake Whatcom

The driver of a stolen car escaped police Wednesday afternoon during a high-speed chase through Bellingham.

A Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop at 11:39 a.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of 36th Street, Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy said in an email. As the deputy was exiting their vehicle, the driver backed up and rammed into the driver’s side of the deputy’s patrol car and drove away.

The uninjured deputy, along with Bellingham Police, pursued the vehicle from Samish Way to Flynn Street.

The driver stopped in the 4000 block of Flynn Street and fled the vehicle, Murphy said. Police set up a perimeter but were unable to locate the driver.

BPD detectives determined the vehicle was listed as stolen from Bellingham Wednesday morning.

The ongoing investigation to identify and capture the driver is being handled by BPD detectives.
