Whatcom County awoke to snow showers Tuesday morning, Feb. 28. A winter weather advisory is in effect until noon, and around 2 inches of snow accumulation is expected.

Expect rain and snow showers until around 2 p.m., with a high temperature of 38 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Some school districts across the county are closed for the day including Ferndale, Meridian, Blaine and Mount Baker. Bellingham Public Schools, Lynden School District and Nooksack Valley School District are operating on a normal schedule and buses are on time as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Western Washington University is also open.

Some slush and snow has accumulated on roads. On- and off-ramps, overpasses, bridges and intersections are slick along Interstate 5, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Before traveling, ensure cars and windshields are completely cleared of snow and ice. WSDOT reminds residents to use extra caution on slippery roadways, and watch for plows and trucks.

Whatcom Transportation Authority canceled Flex rides for 71X, 72X and 75X as of 8:30 a.m. Check the BusTracker application for updates. If a bus stop has a snowflake icon, WTA buses are unable to pick up at that location.

Bellingham International Airport is open and operational as crews work to clear the runway of snow, but travelers are encouraged to check in with their airlines for flight status.
