Man arrested in drug-deal shooting that left one dead

28-year-old Oregon man in custody

Police arrested a 28-year-old man Saturday in connection with an Oct. 16 drug-deal-related shooting in Bellingham’s Roosevelt neighborhood that left one man dead.

Matthew Roberts, 28, of Eugene, Oregon, was booked into Whatcom County Jail and charged with second-degree murder, drive-by shooting and three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, in relation to the shooting incident, according to a Bellingham Police report.

Police responded to a report that a man was shot near the 2300 block of Valencia Street early Oct. 16. Upon arrival, officers found Roberts had been shot and began rendering aid, police said.

Isaiah Mayshack, 31, was also shot and died shortly after arriving at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center by a private vehicle, Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy said in an email.

The initial call was placed at 3:18 a.m. on Oct. 16, with the caller saying they had been shot and needed help. Officers arrived near the intersection of Valencia and Texas streets and found Roberts shot and incoherent before transporting him to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.

While the initial investigation was going on, the hospital called 911 to report a man, later identified as Mayshack, had arrived with a gunshot wound to the chest.

A .38 caliber revolver had one spent shell casing and was found underneath Roberts at the scene of the shooting. Roberts used the revolver to shoot Mayshack, police said.

A .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun was found on the path Mayshack used to run to an apartment to get help, along with a magazine that was missing one bullet. Mayshack used the handgun to shoot Roberts, police said.

Roberts was found with a bag of 1,000 blue pills that tested positive for the presence of fentanyl, as well as two bags of white powder — weighing approximately 47.7 and 48.8 grams each — that both tested positive for the presence of cocaine.
