The Lake Samish Association (LSA) will be hosting a Washington State Boaters Education Card course as a fundraiser for the LSA from 6-8 p.m. Thursday. The class, held at Camp Lutherwood near Lake Samish, is open to everyone.
A Coast Guard-certified instructor will teach the course for an hour before the test with opportunities for discussion, questions and hands-on demonstrations such as knot tying.
A Washington State Boaters Education Card is required by law for anyone aged 12 years or older operating a 15-horsepower or greater motor. The Washington State Boaters Education Card is valid for life and meets requirements in multiple other states as well as Canada. There are some exceptions like being born before Jan. 1, 1955, or being issued a temporary permit, government license or commercial license.
Due to the in-person, hands-on environment, LSA Communication Chair Micah Ping said this class is cheaper, faster and better for learning compared to the online courses.
Defined by their website, LSA is a community organization at Lake Samish that promotes Lake Samish residents to participate in decision-making, protect environmental properties, spread information about the community, work to improve the Lake Samish area, put on public and private events.
Ping said the funds will be used toward putting on events at the LSA, such as community clean-ups and movie nights.
