Looking at week two of spring sports

A lot of delays and postponements because of rain

By Hailey Palmer Staff Reporter

The weather sort of cooperated this week for spring sports.

Most of the schedule had to be moved around to different dates, but some teams this week were still in action.

The Meridian baseball team continued its fast start to the season picking up an 11-6 win over Granite Falls to improve to 3-0.

Junior Tyrel Brooks brought in three runs, Daniel Short drove in two and Alex Short picked up the win on the mound.

Sehome baseball was still looking for its first win after a 6-2 loss to Arlington over the weekend. Junior Carson Neff picked up two RBIs on a double.

In some good news for the Mariners, the Sehome soccer team earned two wins. A 2-1 win against city rival Bellingham and 3-0 win against Oak Harbor. Sophomore Noah Allen and junior Gilberto Andrews scored goals in the first half in Sehome’s win over Bellingham.

Over in track and field, a pair of Nooksack Valley freshmen are leading the 100-meter dash. Evan Bravo is in first with a time of 12.48 seconds and his teammate Trevan Brisky isn’t far behind him in second with a time of 12.5 seconds. Lynden Christian’s Johnny Bouma (12.68), Blaine’s Ben Shailoh (12.8) and Mount Baker’s Brady Bruland (12.87) round out the top five.

Up in the 2A classification, Squalicum senior Leyton Smithson set a new personal record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.01 March 17. Squalicum’s Andre Korbmacher also set a new personal record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.13 seconds at the Chuck Randall Invitational March 19. Squalicum is looking to mirror its boys cross country season this fall, where the Storm claimed the 2A state title. Early on this spring, the Storm are leading most events on the boys side.

Lynden’s Emmy Kroontje sits atop the leaderboard in the girls 800-meter with a time of 2:36.52. Sehome freshman Triya Mitchell is second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.93 seconds behind Burlington-Edison’s Sydney Reisner’s time of 27.63.

Ferndale’s Alyvia Semu leads the 3A girls high jump with a jump of 4-feet-7-inches.

Full leaders and results for all schools across all classifications can be found at athletic.net.

In some of the only girls tennis action of the week, Bellingham beat Burlington-Edison 6-1, Ferndale fell to Anacortes 7-0 and Sehome toppled Lakewood 7-0.
