Western Washington University closed the Viking Union complex Tuesday after a threatening email was sent to some staff.

The threat was specific to the dining hall and referenced a firearm.

Western announced today the plans to reopen the dining hall for dinner at 5 p.m. and to reopen the rest of the building Thursday at 7 a.m.

No new activity has been reported or discovered by law enforcement investigating the email, according to a press release by Joyce Lopes, Vice President of business and financial affairs at Western.

“Although some have speculated that this threat was directed at the Black in Bellingham and other Black History Month events happening in the VU, we have no reason to believe that is the case and no threat was made to any other building, individuals or groups in the email message,” Lopes wrote.

The university plans to increase public safety patrols as a precaution.
