In its last game of the regular season, Bellingham (5-9 overall) lost 63-48 to Mount Vernon Friday night, marking the Bayhawks’ third straight defeat.
At the end of the first quarter, the Bayhawks were up 15-12 against the Bulldogs.
Bayhawks’ senior point guard Alex Breeding and sophomore guard Wyatt Stephan each scored two points while sophomore forward Ian O’Roarty scored five points and junior forward Henry Sheldrup notched six.
Heading into the second quarter, the Bayhawks added 10 more points and led at halftime 25-22.
But Mount Vernon came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. With strong defense, the Bulldogs limited the Bayhawks to only eight points while scoring 29 of their own.
The Bulldogs led at the end of the third quarter 51-33.
The Bayhawks scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, but Bellingham’s push was too little, too late.
Sheldrup scored a game-high 19 points in the Bayhawks’ loss.
“A big part is not being selfish, but getting me the ball because that just created opportunities for the whole team,” Sheldrup said. “If I can be effective and score a lot, it helps the team. Bringing in defenders opens up more opportunities for the whole team, so I feel that’s the kind of plan we were going for.”
Mount Vernon’s Swanson had the second-most points scored in the game with 18. Rodio had 15 and Michael Johnson scored 13.
Despite the loss, Breeding said he was appreciative to be on the court.
“It was great to play with my guys and people I’ve known for a while,” Breeding said.
After both teams dealt with game cancellations during the regular season, Bellingham ended with an overall record of 5-9 and a conference record of 3-9.
But the team’s season continues as the seeding for the postseason tournament will be decided by the end of this weekend.
Bellingham also used the occasion to honor its six seniors: Alex Breeding, Kaeden Potts, Thomas Matthews, Oliver Pagels, Jacob Lawson and Daniel Reyes.
