Volleyball: 1A/2A state volleyball tournament
Teams TBD, Nov. 10–11, Yakima Valley SunDome

While far away, the 1A/2A state volleyball tournament is one of the most exciting two-day prep sporting events of the year.

Meridian has already clinched a berth to the 1A state tournament, and at least one other Whatcom County team will join the Trojans in Yakima.

In Class 2A, Lynden, Bellingham and Sehome are all still in contention to reach the tournament with district matches wrapping up on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Three local teams earned trophies a season ago (Lynden, Nooksack Valley and Lynden Christian) and at least one Whatcom County school has returned home with hardware every year since 2013.

WWU: Women's basketball vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills
7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, Carver Gym

This will be Western Washington University women's basketball season opener and home opener all in one.

The Vikings' game versus Cal State Dominguez Hills is the first of two games that Western will play in the WWU Veteran's Day Classic tournament. It is also the first time Western has played its season opener at Carver Gym since 2018.

Cal State Dominguez Hills enters the game ranked No. 11 nationally in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Western went into last season ranked No. 2 before having its season cut short in the NCAA Division II West Regional Quarterfinal. The Vikings are not nationally ranked ahead of the 2023–24 season.

Recreation: Galbraith Mountain Community Race Series
7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, Galbraith Mountain

The Galbraith Mountain Community Race Series opens with its first trail-running event in a four-race series on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The series is for "all ages, abilities, families and friends," according to its website, and is for those who lovingly embrace winter running in the oft-dreary Pacific Northwest.

There are two distances for each event, and the series' first race includes an 8.5-mile run (1,190 feet of elevation gain) and a 13.2-mile run (2,344 feet of elevation gain).

Pacific Multisports will time each participant, and awards will be distributed at the end of the series.
