UPDATE: One WWU student stabbed off-campus early Saturday

Police say wound is minor, no suspect in custody

One Western Washington University student was stabbed after an altercation at 12:28 a.m. Saturday, May 21 on the 1100 block of Billy Frank Jr. Street.

Officers were informed of a group of people attempting to restrain a person following an altercation, but the person got away before the police arrived, according to a May 24 report from Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy.

The victim told police that he was attempting to stop an altercation when he was stabbed.

He sought help at the Bellingham Fire Department, where he received EMT assistance. He was later taken to the PeaceHealth St Joseph hospital with a minor stab wound.

A person of interest was seen heading away from campus after the incident carrying a silver knife, according to a Western Alert on Saturday. The person was described as a white male, age 20–21, 5 feet, 11 inches tall and 150 pounds. Murphy stated that witnesses said he was wearing a white shirt and a black baseball cap.

The initial Western Alert stated that two students were stabbed, but Murphy clarified that police only know of one.

“There were other victims who were spit upon and punched during the altercation, no other stab wounds of which we are aware at this time in the investigation,” the report stated.

Officers interviewed multiple witnesses and are still looking for anyone who has information that led to the altercation and can assist in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bellingham Police Department at 360-778-8611 or use its email tip line.
