It’s almost that time again.
The postseason for spring sports is approaching for the first time since 2019. For those who remember, Whatcom County technically has some defending state champions right now, but it’s hard to compare this year’s teams to those of three years ago.
Regardless, the Sehome boys soccer team and Bellingham girls track and field squad claimed team titles in 2019 and look poised to make postseason runs.
Bellingham and Squalicum sit atop the Northwest Conference standings in boys soccer with Mount Vernon not far behind in third. Squalicum has already beaten Mount Vernon, but the Storm and Bayhawks are scheduled to meet this week.

Mount Vernon, Lynden and Oak Harbor are in a three-way tie at the top of the conference baseball standings with 8-1 records. Lynden beat Oak Harbor earlier this season and will have played Mount Vernon by the end of the week. The shuffle at the top should settle by then.

All three Bellingham schools should have fantastic postseasons in track and field. It wouldn’t be surprising if a track and field state championship came back to the city by any of the schools at the end of May.

Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley are two of the top softball teams in the state and the conference standings are no different. Mount Baker is undefeated and sits in the top spot, but that could change soon with the Mountaineers and Pioneers set to play next week.
In girls tennis, Bellingham and Sehome both have undefeated records, but the Mariners have played more matches, so they are currently in first place. The Bayhawks and Mariners will play each other this week, but both are looking good with about three weeks left of the regular season.
The golfers this spring are a little harder to keep track of without scores routinely posted online, but the Birger Solberg Invitational a few weeks ago showed Whatcom County has strong talent again.
The first week of May marks the end of the regular season. From there, it’ll be a sprint to the end of the month with districts, sub-districts and finally, after a long wait, the state tournaments.
