An Anacortes woman who had been reported missing in late June last year was found dead in Oregon last week.
Evelyn Smith, 77, was last seen on June 23, 2024 around 5 p.m at her residence, according to a social media post from the Anacortes Police Department. A day later, she was seen at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine when she unsuccessfully tried to enter Canada.
The Washington State Patrol issued a Silver Alert for Smith a week after she was last seen.
Oregon State Police responded to a report of a crashed car before noon Feb. 27, 2025 on Highway 30 in Columbia County, near the Washington-Oregon border. The car, a blue Saturn Aura, was found down in an embankment and Smith was dead inside.
It’s unclear how long the vehicle was in the embankment before it was found and there’s no signs of foul play, according to OSP.
The Anacortes Police Department was notified and Smith’s next of kin was contacted, according to OSP.
The investigation is ongoing.
