Marcus Nixon’s 20 points lifts Squalicum past Nooksack Valley

Storm jump Pioneers in conference standings

Senior guard Marcus Nixon scored a game-high 20 points and Squalicum boys basketball jumped Nooksack Valley in the Northwest Conference standings with a 61-49 win Friday, Jan. 31 at Nooksack Valley High.

The Pioneers had a hot start with a 13-10 lead after the first quarter. Senior guard Corey Olney led the early offensive momentum for Nooksack Valley with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. He and Brady Ackerman each finished with a team-high 14 points.

Squalicum fought back in the second quarter, only trailing 27-25 by halftime. Nixon showcased his athleticism on both sides of the court, scoring eight of his 20 points in the first half.

The Storm took over in the third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers by eight points to take a 43-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Squalicum’s Blake Elston scored five points and Ty Hoffman followed with four in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Ackerman tried to rally Nooksack Valley back into the game with six points, including making both of his free throws after being fouled. However, Nixon and Hunter Calloway combined for 13 of the Storm’s 18 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Nooksack Valley (9-8) will host Oak Harbor at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. Squalicum (9-9) will host Sehome at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5.
