Up to 20 inches of snow is possible at Mount Baker

Snow enthusiasts and homebodies rejoice: an atmospheric river is making its way through the Pacific Northwest over the weekend, and is expected to leave Bellingham with its first dusting of snow since last winter.

Rain is forecast to start Thursday evening and last throughout Friday. On Friday night, as the temperature drops to 35, rain is expected to turn to snow. No snow accumulation is expected overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain-snow will continue Saturday with highs near 42, and chances for freezes overnight, according to the NWS.

Snow is expected to start to stick in the lowlands Saturday night. Snow showers could last through Sunday afternoon with less than 1 inch of snow accumulation possible, according to NWS.

The chance for snow showers lasts through early next week.

Skiers and snowboarders might enjoy fresh powder starting Friday and ending Sunday. Up to 20 inches of fresh snow is possible at Mount Baker throughout Friday into Saturday morning, according to the NWS.

Portions of the North Cascades are under a winter storm watch starting 7 p.m. Thursday and ending at 4 p.m. Saturday. Maple Falls, Deming and Concrete are also included in the winter storm watch area.

If you’re heading out to the backcountry to enjoy the snowy weather, please check the Northwest Avalanche Center for avalanche warnings. Avalanche forecasts are issued at 6 p.m. Also, remember to check road conditions before you head out.

So wax those skis and warm up the cups of tea, winter is here.
