Update: Person killed on southbound I-5 crash in Bellingham

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes

One person was killed in a crash on southbound Interstate 5 near Northwest Avenue in Bellingham around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Sean Smet, 24, Bellingham, was killed after he was struck by a 2019 red Subaru Crosstrek, according to WSP. Smet was pronounced dead on scene.

The 36-year-old driver of the Crosstrek was not injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation as of Wednesday, Jan. 8.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by this incident,” Washington State Trooper Kelsey Harding said in a tweet.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of I-5 near Northwest Avenue were blocked for around two hours due to the collision involving the death. One southbound lane was still blocked as of 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

All lanes reopened around 1 a.m. Wednesday.
