JESSE’S PICKS
Baby Cakes Mardi Gras Celebration
9 p.m. Tuesday, March 4
Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.
There’s a lot going on for Mardi Gras, and The Atlantics at the FireHouse Arts and Events Center and Sleepy Alligators at Boundary Bay Brewery would also be perfectly good choices. But the show at the Wild Buffalo that night is also serving as a wake of sorts for the last night of service at Bayou on Bay, and it features funky good time music from Baby Cakes to boot. If you really want to laissez les bon temps rouler, I think this is the place.
Countercurrents
7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5
The Blue Room, 202 E. Holly St., Unit 301
Countercurrent are a folk music duo from Olympia who alternate between playing original and traditional songs in concert settings and contradances (traditional New England-style folk dancing, done in long lines with moves that resemble both square dancing and English country dancing). They’re favorites on the folk festival circuit and have played up here a lot. They’ve got a new album coming out, and their show at the Blue Room on Wednesday, March 5 will combine their two modes — starting with a concert and following that up with a contradance.
Bitch and Skip the Needle
7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6
Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.
The musician known simply as Bitch started out in the ‘90s as part of the absurdist queer folk/punk/performance art duo Bitch and Animal. Since then she’s done a couple of solo albums and continued touring extensively. She’s coming to the side room at the Mount Baker Theatre on Thursday, March 6 with opener Skip the Needle.
76 Charger
7 p.m. Saturday, March 8
Ramble Tamble, 1313 N. State St.
76 Charger are locals who go way back to the sweaty, outrageous, cheap-beer-soaked garage rock scene that Bellingham was so known for back in the ‘90s and early 2000s. I haven’t seen their name mentioned for a while but they’re back in action at Ramble Tamble on Saturday, March 8 with support from Stereo Donkey and Pawn Mongo. Expect this one to get raucous.
