Mat Classic Day 2: 1A/2A begins, 3A competes for medals

Third and final day will be 1A/2A medal rounds Saturday

The second day of Mat Classic XXXVI, which began with Class 3A/4A schools Thursday, Feb. 20, moved slowly Friday, Feb. 21 with 1A/2A schools joining the fold at the Tacoma Dome.

The 1A/2A boys and girls only made it through two winner’s bracket rounds and one consolation round Friday. The 3A/4A schools will wrap up their finals Friday night.

Anacortes

On the boys side, Nash Kirby (106 pounds), Dominic Ellertson (126), Talin Kerr (132), Rylin Lang (165), Makhi Kilgore (175) and Kade West (285) all went 2-0 on the first day.

Jordan Jopson (126), Lucien Franacioch (144) and Logan Baumgaertner (190) all went 1-1 and are still in contention for medals. Syler Swain (157) and Ronnie Ray (215) went 0-2 and were eliminated.

On the girls side, Amelia Myers (125), Cora Myers (135), Alita Ciron-Penton (155) and Hailey Rains (235) all went 2-0 on the first day. Jordyn Simpson went 2-1 at 115 pounds.

Going 1-1 on the day and still alive for Saturday are Hannah Lenander (120), Alycia Sandre (130), Madi Shafer (135), Jai-Lee James (140), Paige Kirby (140), Ella DeGraaf (145), and Shiloh Gentry (170).

Bellingham

Bayhawk boys sent five wrestlers and all of them will be fighting through the consolation bracket after going 1-1. Bryant Razo will look to bounce back at 106 pounds, along with Jacob Mccarty at 113, Conor Rodriguez Stiff at 150, Nathan Las at 157 and Julian Montoya at 215.

No Bayhawk girls qualified for state. 


Blaine

Blaine boys have all their wrestlers alive for the second day. Vinnie Saia (120), Daniel Johner (132) and Otto Shelton (285) each received first-round byes and won their second-round matches, and will head into Day 2 on Saturday, Feb. 22, with 2-0 records.

Christopher Zamudio (106) and Aidyn Hancock (126) at both 2-1, while Denali Deming (132), Matt Campion (138), Rhys Milligan (175) and Ziyang Yu (215) are all 1-1.

On the girls side, Makenna Lauiser (105), Analicea Ordonez (155) and Jasmine Delo Santos (190) all had first-round byes then won their second-round matches. Abigail Marquez is 1-1 at 130 pounds.

Burlington-Edison 

Chase Weber had two straight wins, both falls, to go 2-0 and reach the quarterfinals at 144 pounds. Eden Maldonado (106), Damian Fernandez (113), Damion Lehman (120) and Dario Sepulveda (285) all went 1-1.

Angel Ayala Ramirez and Aiden Ashbach were eliminated at 113 and 190 pounds, respectively.

On the girls side, all three wrestlers finished 0-1. Krianna Dela Cruz competed at 100, Analia Fernandez at 105 and Mia Torres at 145. 

Ferndale

The boys finished 29th with 64.5 points and the girls placed 54th with nine points. Wyatt Strait began Friday in the sixth round of consolations. He battled in the medal rounds and placed seventh with a 5-3 sudden victory.

Lynden

Eliseo Lopez Ortiz is one of four Lynden wrestlers moving onto Saturday, going 1-1 at 120 pounds. Trigg Jorgensen, John Johnston and Eric Antonio were eliminated at 144, 175 and 285, respectively.

Yaretzi Nava Gonzalez and Lily Miller went 1-1 at 120 pounds, while Allyson Bartlett is 1-1 at 155 and Isabelle Dominguez 2-1 at 190.

Meridian

After receiving a bye, Rhett Duersch is undefeated at 215 pounds with a 2-0 record. Trey Lewis-Kelley follows with a 1-1 record at 106 pounds. Jonathan Henry and Robert Nalbach went 1-1 at 113 pounds, while Carson Siadal and Ethan Valdich went 1-1 at 144, and Vincent Truong went 1-1 at 157.

Hailey Horsman (115), Aaliyah Fuentes (120), Sukhpree Kaur (135) and Kennedy Farrar (170) are all undefeated, and Kamber Schroder (110) and Andrea Cruz (140) are each 1-1.

Priya Sangha (120), Grace Schroeder (125), Jessica Mendez Ortiz (145), Sarena Mander (145), Gretchen Zandstra (17) and Piper Dyck (190) are all 1-1.

Mount Baker

Mount Baker’s Andrew Monteith (126), Gavin Compton (138), Wyatt Freeman (165) and Dylan Moa (190) are all undefeated. Jeremiah Sheridan is 1-1 at 285, and Henry Tobin and Gunner McGrath are 1-1 at 150 and 175, respectively.

Ana Camacho (110), Tyla Olson (140) and Stefany Camacho (155) are all 2-0. Emily Moa (100) and Sophia Moa (130) are 1-1. Kelly Camacho is 1-1 at 105 pounds.

Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon’s boys team finished 33rd in the 3A team scores with 57 points. The girls placed 22nd with 61 points. Bryson Keller bounced back to place fifth in the 165-pound bracket. Cassidy Halgren placed fifth at 110 pounds, and Dakota Brown placed eighth in the 235-pound consolation bracket.

Nooksack Valley 

Abraham Hernandez (150) and Owyn Cunningham (157) are 1-1. Andrew Dugger lost his first match at 165 and No. 1 seed Wyatt Bacon medically forfeited his first match at 190. 

Mina Azzam finished the first day 1-0 at 235 pounds.

Sehome

Coling McGiverin and Grant Oliver went 1-1 at 150 and 165 pounds, respectively. Aiden Holmes was eliminated at 165 pounds and Charly Eggert is 1-1 in the girls 110 division.

Squalicum

Brenden Ferrall-Garcia (132), Thane Hinds (138), Darrin Nielsen (150) and Simeon Blas (157) are all 1-1. Brendon Le is 1-1 at 132 pounds.

On the girls side, Claire Hume (130), Brooke Legoe (145) and Kaniya Bagby (190) are all 2-0. Sophia Moreno, Drew Parrin and Esme Rodriguez are 1-1 at 125, 135 and 170 pounds, respectively.
