Boys and girls wrestlers from Whatcom and Skagit counties secured state berths at their respective District 1 tournaments at various locations Saturday, Feb. 15.
2B/1B/1A girls
At the 2B/1B/1A girls tournament at Squalicum High, the top two wrestlers earned berths to Mat Classic. Meridian won the team title with 217 points, followed by Blaine (146) and Mount Baker (115.5).
Mount Baker’s Emily Moa placed second at 100 pounds. Blaine’s Makenna Lausier pinned Mount Baker’s Kelly Camacho for the 105-pound title. Mountaineer’s Ana Camacho won at 110 pounds while Meridian’s Kamber Schroeder finished second.

At 115 pounds, Mount Baker’s Karalyn Cook beat Hailey Horsmon in the title match. Meridian’s Sukhpreet Kaur defeated her teammate Priya Sangha in the 120-pound title match. Trojans’ Grace Schroeder defeated Blaine’s Julianne Whaley in the 125 championship.
Blaine’s Abigail Marquez won at 130 pounds while Mount Baker’s Sophia Moa placed second.
Meridian’s Aaliyah Fuentes earned a state berth after being the lone wrestler in the 135-pound division. Mount Baker’s Tyla Olson defeated Meridian’s Andrea Cruz at 140 pounds.
At 145 pounds, Meridian’s Sarena Mander defeated her teammate Jessica Mendez Ortiz. Blaine’s Analicea Ordonez beat Mount Baker’s Stefany Camacho by medical forfeit.
Meridian’s Kennedy Farrar defeated her teammate Gretchen Zandstra for the 170-pound title. At 190 pounds, Blaine’s Jasmine Delo-Santos defeated Meridian’s Piper Dyck.
Nooksack Valley’s Mina Azzam was the lone competitor at 235 pounds, earning a state berth and district title.
2A girls
In 2A girls at Squalicum High, the top 4 wrestlers earned a berth to Mat Classic. Anacortes also won the team title with 239 points, Lakewood finished second with 121.5 and Squalicum was third with 119.
At 100 pounds, Burlington-Edison’s Krianna De la Cruz finished third.
Burlington Edison’s Analia Fernandez won at 105 pounds, and Bellingham’s Jacqueline Carillo Garcia placed second.
At 110 pounds, Sehome’s Charly Eggert finished second and Bayhawks’ Maddy Smith placed fourth. At 115 pounds, Anacortes’ Jordyn Simpson won her finals match by a pin.
At 120 pounds, Lynden’s Yaretzi Nava Gonzales won the title, teammate Lily Miller finished fourth and Seahawks’ Hannah Lenander placed third.
Anacortes’ Amelia Myers dominated the 125-pound division, while Squaliucm’s Sophia Moreno placed third. Storm’s Claire Hume cruised to a district title at 130 pounds, Seahawks Alycia Sandre placed second and Bellingham’s Abigail Webb came in third.
Anacortes’ Cora Myers won at 135 pounds, while Madi Shafer placed second and Squalicum’s Drew Perrin also finished fourth.
Seahawks’ Jai-Lee James and Paige Kirby placed first and second, respectively, at 140 pounds, while Bayhawks Madison Farmer finished third.
At 145 pounds, Storm’s Brooke Legoe won the title, Bayhawks’ Caitlyn Crawford finished second, Seahawks’ Ella Degraaf was third and Tigers’ Mia Torres finished fourth.
Anacortes’ Alita Ceron-Penton won at 155 pounds and Lynden’s Allyson Bartlett finished third. At 170 pounds, Squalicum’s Esme Rodriguez placed second and Anacortes’ Shiloh Gentry finished third.
Storm’s Kaniya Bagby defeated Lions’ Isabel Dominguez at 190 pounds, and Seahawks’ Hailey Rains won at 235 pounds.
3A girls
At 3A districts at Oak Harbor High, Mount Vernon placed seventh with 233 points while Ferndale finished 11th with 136. The top 10 wrestlers in each weight class earned a berth to state.
At 100 pounds, Mount Vernon’s Hailee Grenier placed sixth. At 105 pounds, Ferndale’s Yesena Zuniega and Mount Vernon’s Rihanna Madrid battled for the final two state berths, with Madrid winning to secure ninth place.
Bulldogs’ Cassiddy Halgren pinned her opponents at 110 pounds before reaching the finals and placing second.
At 115 pounds, Bulldogs Isabelle Kortlever finished fourth while Emily Bonifacio was ninth. Ally Warrick placed seventh at 120 pounds, and Addison Brown placed 10th at 130 pounds.
Mount Vernon’s Zoe Brocksmith finished seventh at 135 pounds. At 140 pounds, Bulldogs’ Rianna Gonzales placed fifth and Golden Eagles’ Carmen Finkbonner placed eighth.
Ferndale’s Kennedy Medley was second at 145 pounds and Chanelle Bill-Kinley placed fourth. Evelyn Nogales finished seventh at 155 pounds.
At 235 pounds, Mount Vernon’s Dakota Brown placed fourth.
1A boys
At 1A boys at Mount Baker High, Blaine won the team title with 270.5 points, Mount Baker finished second with 257.5 and Meridian was third with 240. The top 2 wrestlers in each weight class advanced to Mat Classic.
In the 106 division, Blaine’s Christopher Zamudio defeated Meridian’s Treyson Lewis-Kelley for the district title.
Meridian’s Robert Nalbach beat his teammate Jonathan Henry for the 113-pound title. At 120 pounds, Blaine’s Vinnie Saia defeated his teammate Cole Voigt by forfeit.
Mount Baker’s Andrew Montieth defeated Blaine’s Aidyn Hancock for the 126-pound title. Borderites’ Daniel Johner defeated his teammate Denali Deming at 132 pounds.
Mount Baker’s Gavin Compton defeated Blaine’s Matt Campion at 138 pounds. Meridian’s Carson Siadal beat Meridian’s Ethan Valich at 144 pounds.
At 150 pounds, Nooksack Valley’s Abraham Hernandez topped Mount Baker’s Henry Tobin. Nooksack Valley’s Owyn Cunningham defeated Meridian’s Vincent Truong at 157 pounds.
Mountaineers’ Wyatt Freeman beat Nooksack Valley’s Andrew Dugger at 165.
At 175 pounds, Blaine’s Rhys Milligan defeated Mount Baker’s Gunner McGrath. At 190 pounds, Nooksack Valley’s Wyatt Bacon defeated Mount Baker’s Dylan Moa.
Meridian’s Rhett Duersch defeated Blaine’s Ziyang Yu at 215 pounds and Blaine’s Otto Shleton defeated Mount Baker’s Jeremiah Sheridan.
2A boys
At 2A boys at Marysville-Pilchuck High, the home-team Tomahawks won the team title with 381.5 points, Anacortes followed with 218.5 and Burlington-Edison was third with 244.5. The top 4 in each weight class clinched state berths.
Anacortes’ Nash Kirby won at 106 pounds, Burlington-Edison’s Eden Maldonado placed third and Bellingham’s Bryant Razo was fourth.
Burlington-Edison’s Damian Fernandez won at 113 pounds while his teammate Angel Ayala Ramirez placed fourth. Bellingham’s Jacob McCarty placed second. At 120 pounds, Tigers Dmon Lehman defeated Lynden’s Eliseo Ortiz Lopez for third place.
Anacortes’ Jordan Jopson and Dominic Ellertson placed first and second respectively at 126 poudns while Sehome’s Damian Cruz finished fourth.
At 132 pounds, Seahawks Talin Kerr won while Squalicum’s Brendan Ferrall-Garcia finished second and Brendon Le finished fourth.
Tigers Eli Sanderson defeated Squalicum’s Thane Hinds for third place at 138 pounds. At 144 pounds, Burlington Edison’s Chase Weber defeated Lynden’s Trigg Jorgensen for the title, and Seahawks Lucien Franacioch finished third.
Bellingham’s Conor Rodriguez-Stiff won at 150 pounds, Sehome’s Colin Mcgiverin placed third and Squalicum’s Darrin Nielsen finished fourth.
At 157 pounds, Bayhawks Nathan Laas placed second, Storm’s Simeon Blas placed third and Seahawks Syler Swain finished fourth.
Anacortes Rylin Lang won at 165 pounds, Sehome’s Grant Oliver finished second and Mariners Grant Holmes was third. At 175 pounds, Anacortes Makhi Kilgore defeated Lynden’s John Johnston for third place.
At 190 pounds, Anacortes Logan Baumgaertner won while Burlington Edison’s Aiden Ashbach placed fourth. Bellingham’s Julian Montoya defeated Anacortes Ronnie Ray for third place at 215 pounds.
At 285 pounds, Anacortes Kade West placed second and Burlington-Edison’s Dario Sepulveda defeated Lynden’s Eric Antonio for third place.
3A boys
Mount Vernon competed in the 3A District 1 North tournament at Monroe High while Ferndale competed at the 3A District 1 South tourney, both on Feb. 8. The top four in each weight class earned a berth at the Mat Classic. The two wrestlers who placed fifth place in each weight class at the North and South meets will face off for a final state berth.
Mount Vernon’s Manuel Camacho placed fifth at 106 pounds. In his wrestle-off, Camacho won by a 17-0 tech fall.
Bulldogs’ Carlos Barajas won at 126 pounds, defeating his teammate Armani Grullon by a 7-2 decision. Before losing the championship match, Grullon picked up a couple of pins and a tech fall.
Mount Vernon’s Alexander Solano and Joaquin Lucatero finished fourth at 138 pounds and 150 pounds, respectively. Teammate Gideon Hope finished fifth at 157 pounds. In his wrestle-off, he pinned his opponent in the first period.
Bulldogs’ Bryson Keller placed second at 165 pounds after medically forfeiting the championship match, Teammate Jonathan Ortiz placed fourth in the 190-pound division, and Marques Flores placed fifth at 210 pounds.
Ferndale’s Edward Reyes and Ryder Abbott placed fourth at 113 pounds and 126 pounds, respectively.
Golden Eagles’ Alex Depass placed second at 150 pounds, while Parker Merwin rallied with four straight wins to claim third at 157 pounds.
Ferndale’s Wyatt Broyles pinned four opponents in 2 minutes or less to secure first place at 165 pounds, Teammate Adam Baadar placed third place at 175 pounds and Wyatt Strait won at 285 pounds.
The 3A boys and girls Mat Classic tournament takes place Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome. The 1B/2B/1A girls and 2A girls, along with 1A and 2A boys will all compete at Mat Classic Feb. 21–22.
