The Bellingham Figure Skating Club will be sponsoring a public ice fundraiser for the families of victims killed in the tragic Flight 5342 air collision in Washington, D.C.

The event is scheduled from 3-4:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17 at the Bellingham Sportsplex.

All proceeds and donations will be contributed to the U.S. Figure Skating Family Support Fund, created by USFSA to provide financial assistance to the families of the 28 figure skaters, coaches and families who died on Jan. 29. They were returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, when a United States Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with the American Airlines plane over the Potomac River.

“Our goal is to raise $1,000 between the entry donations and the bake sale,” BSFC Legacy Board Member Hope Bright said. “Our bigger goal is to remember these skaters, coaches and family members, and this is our way of providing support to those that are grieving the loss of their loved ones.”

The suggested minimum donation is $8 for all skaters and includes ice skate rentals.

“Figure Skating is a small community nationwide and the entire board and club grieved the loss of these skaters, their coaches, and their family members that were on the plane,” Bright said.

If you cannot make the event and would like to help, you can make a direct donation to the U.S. Figure Skating Family Support Fund.
