James William (“Bill”) Tootell, a beloved musician, computer administrator, photographer, and poet, passed away after a battle with aphasia and dementia on January 15, 2025, in Bellingham, WA, at the age of 78. A creative force and a deeply cherished member of the community, Bill leaves behind a legacy of music, art, and intellectual curiosity that touched countless lives.
Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to James Tootell and Mary (Degler) Tootell, Bill had a lifelong passion for music, beginning in the 1960s and spanning decades of performance and collaboration. Whether playing bass in bands, composing, or simply sharing his love of sound, he brought people together through his artistry. His work as a computer administrator for Associated Students at Western Washington University showcased his sharp mind and collegiality, while his photography and poetry reflected his unique perspective on the world.
Beyond his talents, Bill was known for his wit, empathy, and unwavering authenticity. He held strong convictions, a sharp sense of humor, and an ability to connect deeply with those around him. He was a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration to many.
Bill is survived by his sister Carol Todd (Donald) and brother David Tootell (Debra). His sister Ronnie Brucks and his brother-in-law Dennis Brucks predeceased him. He is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his BFFs Marc Cutler and Vickie Farmer.
A celebration of his life will be held on March 9, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at the Bellingham Ferry Terminal, featuring performances and remembrances from those who loved him. In honor of his favorite things, guests are encouraged to enjoy wraps, brownies, and beverages as we gather to share memories and music.
Bill will be dearly missed and never forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ACLU.
