Bellingham dominates while Ferndale cruises past competition in separate meet

The Bellingham girls swim team won all 12 events in a 119-60 rout of Mount Vernon on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center.

The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay, won by Bellingham’s Addy Hayes, Peyton Acord, Grace Sorensen and June Wilson in 2:03.20. Mount Vernon’s Sadie Jones, Elieen Munoz, Alex Van Dyk and Danika Dowd placed second, and Bellingham’s Madeline Nies, Jasmine Garcia, Mandela Windrem and Olive Sherrer finished third.

Bayhawks’ Annika Holland won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.97, while Bulldogs’ Amanat Narwal placed second and Bayhawks’ Emi Durkin finished third.

Garcia won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:35.85, Van Dyk finished second and Hayes finished third. In the 50-yard freestyle, Wilson won in 28.54 seconds, Windrem finished second and Dowd was third. Bellingham’s Madeline Fredette won the 1-meter diving with 150.95 points and Aviva Weinstein finished second.

Sorensen won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.36 seconds, Garcia finished second and Van Dyk was third. In the 100-yard freestyle, Windrem won in 1:03.70, while Wilson finished second and Narwal finished third. 

Sorensen also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:22.72, Acord finished second and Jones was third. 

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Holland, Garcia, Wilson and Windrem won in 1:55.76. Mount Vernon’s Amelia George, Munoz, Narwhal and Van Dyk finished second, while Bellingham’s Helaina Taysi, Nies, Durkin and Sherrer came in third.

Holland also won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:15.40, Nies was second and Jones came in third. Acord won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.32, while Hayes placed second and Mount Vernon’s Bindi Sjogren ended up third. 


In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Sorensen, Acord, Holland and Hayes won in 4:10.64, while Narwhal, Dowd, Jones and Rhiannon Nore finished second, and Mount Vernon’s Threasa Man, George, Kelly Lewis and Jaylene Kurtz-Rios came in third.

Ferndale picks up three wins in five-team meet

Ferndale came away with three wins in a five-team meet that included Squalicum, Meridian, Blaine and Mount Baker on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Ferndale High School.

The Golden Eagles beat Squalicum 86-63, Mount Baker 111-10, and Blaine 102-26 Squalicum beat Meridian 88-8. Meridian defeated Mount Baker 12-10, and Blaine beat Meridian 29-12.

Ferndale’s 200-yard medley relay team had the fastest time in 2:38.02, while Neveah Kidd won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:24.67. Squalicum’s Fiona Hamai won the 200-yard individual medley in 3:19.59.

Ferndale’s Aiyanna Brown won the 50-yard freestyle in 32.53 seconds, while Squalicum’s Natalie Ravitsky won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:31.82. Storm’s Kate Truemper won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:07.42, and Kidd won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:27.57.

Ferndale’s 200-yard freestyle relay team won in 2:32.38, and Truemper followed with a win in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:15.47. Ferndale’s Cara Esparza won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:40.41.

Squalicum’s 400-yard freestyle relay team won the final event of the day in 5:24.42
